NBA’s Miami Heat announced on Tuesday that they bought a stake in the esports organisation Misfits. The team referred to this the arrangement as a strategic partnership and stated that it is unique because it calls for Heat to assist in all the duties. These include branding, promotion, marketing, retail, sponsorship, and digital activation, and to cross-promote Misfits and Heat. Ben Spoont, the owner of Misfits, confirmed that the purchased stake is in no way a controlling interest in Misfits, but the other terms of the partnership are confidential. Nick Arison, the CEO of Miami Heat stated that the team pride their selves on being innovative in every aspect of business and sport. Ben Spoont formed the Misfits in 2016 as a League of Legends team in the ECS (European Challenger Series) that managed to qualify for the European LCS. The organisation has also signed a Heroes of the Storm team, as well as an Overwatch team. They also signed a Super Smash Bros player and several Hearthstone ones. Miami Heat was formed back in 1988 and so far have managed to win a total of three league championships. Michael McCullough, the executive vice-president of Heat, stated that one of the things that intrigued them about Misfits is that there are many similarities between them and Heat. They are looking to become one of the best teams, as well as one of the top organisations in esports, and that is what Heat want to be in the NBA.
